Primrose structure fire update via Halifax Professional Firefighters
At 9:39 AM, #hfxfirefighters responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in Dartmouth. Our members arrived to heavy fire on a second-floor balcony that had extended to the floor above. Our members quickly went to work, with an aggressive fire attack supported by an aerial. A second alarm was required to bring the fire under control.
This same building was the site of a major third-alarm fire in 2018.
Our aerials only have two professional fire fighters—below both industry and manufacturer recommendations. To operate them properly on scenes like this, fire fighters must be pulled from other units, leaving other critical fire ground tasks short. Robbing Peter to pay Paul isn’t how a fire service should function.
In 2024, HRM met its own response time standards for an effective firefighting force just 54.5% of the time—and those standards already fall short of NFPA recommendations. Staffing our aerials with a full crew of four fire fighters would not only improve safety on scene but also help boost these response numbers.
