NO SMOKE ALARMS. NO WARNING

29921On Halloween night, #hfxfirefighters responded to a fire in an apartment on Sylvia Avenue in Spryfield.

Our members from Station 6 arrived to find a fire that had been confined to a bedroom.

But something concerning was discovered: There were no smoke alarms in the affected unit, and the building’s alarm system had not activated.

The emergency was reported after someone noticed black smoke and a burning smell coming from the apartment.

Just hours later, as clocks turned back, we reminded residents to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

This incident is an important reminder of why.

Working smoke alarms provide early warning, giving occupants precious time to escape before conditions become life-threatening.

Please take a moment today to check your smoke alarms. Make sure they’re installed, working and present on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.

Don’t wait until someone else notices the smoke.
