Grass Fire Alert – Cause: Helium Balloon
Our department responded to a grass fire sparked by an unexpected cause — a helium balloon that made contact with power lines.
When metallic (Mylar) balloons hit electrical wires, they can cause a short circuit or sparks. In today’s dry conditions, that was enough to ignite the grass below.
A few reminders:
• Always secure helium balloons tightly.
• Never release them outdoors — they can travel far and cause serious damage.
• Consider using latex balloons instead, which are less likely to conduct electricity.
We’re thankful this fire was caught early and didn’t spread. A big thanks to a local construction worker on his way home who saw the smoke and knocked the fire down quickly with an extinguisher he had on board.
Our members arrived shortly after and fully extinguished the remaining hot spots, ensuring the area was safe and under control.
It’s a good reminder that even something as simple as a balloon can lead to a dangerous situation.
