Yesterday morning, #hfxfirefighters responded to the Halifax Grain Elevator for reports of smoke near a building
Our members arrived to find a deep-seated fire in a pile of grain dust.
Grain elevators pose a unique hazard. Fine grain dust ignites easily and, under the right conditions, can cause explosions. In 2003, this same facility experienced a major explosion and fire caused by heat buildup—a reminder of how volatile these environments can be.
