This is a rapidly moving fire with a number of homes already engulfed. Please remain away from the area to allow our officers and partner agencies to assist with evacuating residents.

Residents of Westwood Subdivision in Tantallon. Please immediately evacuate your homes due to an out of control fire. Evacuation route is Windsor Dr. to Hammonds Plains Rd. Emergency alert to be issued by @NS_DNRR via EMO imminently. RCMP officers on scene assisting with evacuation.

UPDATE: the fire has now spread, and an evacuation order is now issued for Yankeetown (Highland Park) subdivision, Hammonds Plains. Evacuation ordered for Westwood Hills subdivision, Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia due to ongoing multiple structure and forest fires. All residents in Westwood Hills ordered to evacuate. Comfort Centre opened at Blackpoint Community Centre, Black Point.

UPDATE: Evacuation order extended to Haliburton Hills, Glen Arbour, Pockwock Rd, White Hills subdivision, Lucasville Rd all the way to Sackville Dr. This is in addition to the earlier evacuation orders. (EMO) Comfort centres opened in support of those impacted by the fires in Tantallon and area – May 28, 8:50 p.m.

(EMO) Volunteer Halifax SAR are setting up to assist in multiple roles required at the Tantallon Fire. Some duties will include evacuation and transport duties as well as other tasks required.
Multiple fire units from both HRFE and DND as well as DNR crews with police assistance continue to work this large fire which has triggered multiple evacuations and air quality statement.

UPDATE: Fire evacuation order now issued to include Maplewood, Voyageur Way including St George Blvd including all side streets, McCabe Lake area and Indigo Shores. Residents are reminded that evacuation orders will not be lifted before Monday 29 May. Halifax Regional Municipality declares local state of emergency
Effective 11 p.m. tonight, Mayor Mike Savage and Regional Council have declared a local state of emergency in the communities affected by the fires. The local state of emergency will be in effect for seven days, unless otherwise lifted or extended.
Emergency responders are working around the clock to keep people safe and reduce the threats posed by the fires in the Tantallon and Hammonds Plains areas. Residents are urged to follow the directives of emergency responders.
Under the Emergency Management Act, declaring a state of local emergency is a legal mechanism that provides the municipal government with a higher level of intergovernmental coordination, access to emergency discretionary funds, the ability to mobilize additional supports, organizations and businesses to support evacuated residents.
The municipality will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves. The most up-to-date information is available at halifax.ca/fire and @hfxgov on Twitter.

Westwood Hills, Tantallon update: The wildfire, estimated to cover 788 hectares, is out of control.
Crews on scene include 32 DNRR, 170 from HRM, 7 from Department of Natural Defence, 30 HRM fire trucks, 2 DNRR helicopters and 1 water bomber from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Winds expected to gust to 40 km/h today. Various structures in the community may be damaged. This is a rapidly moving fire. People are asked to stay away from the area.

Effective 29 May 2023, a province-wide ban on open fires is in effect because of dry conditions. Open fires are not permitted anywhere in the province. The ban applies to fires in provincial parks and private campgrounds. It also applies to backyard campfires and brush burning.
The ban also applies to fireworks and will remain in effect until burn restrictions change.

Last night Halifax SAR continued to operate in support of the Hammonds Plains wildfire efforts, assisting Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency with manning checkpoints and conducting patrols of the evacuation area.

Take note
Premier Houston said that effective as of 4 pm on Tuesday, all activities ( hiking, camping, fishing, ATV use) is prohibited. The ban includes forestry and mining industries and other commercial activities on government land.

Due to a wildfire and potential ammonia leak, there is a mandatory evacuation ordered for the following streets in Bedford:
Olive St, Bernard St, Estelle St, Lewis St, Famers Dairy, Giles, Bluewater Rd, Topsail, Command, Gary Martin, Lasalle, Castlestone, and Hammonds Plains Rd from intersection of Giles to intersection of Larry Uteck Dr.
Comfort centre will be opened at the Lions Club at Lebrun Recreation Centre, 36 Holland Ave, Bedford.
