RCMP charges two with attempted murder following assault in Paq’tnkek First Nation
Antigonish County District RCMP has charged a man and a woman with attempted murder in connection with an assault that occurred in Paq’tnkek First Nation.
On July 23, at approximately 4 p.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of an altercation on Petow Loop Ext. Upon arrival at the scene, investigators learned that a 38-year-old woman, armed with a knife, approached a 50-year-old woman who was walking along the roadway. A physical altercation ensued, during which the 50-year-old woman gained control of the knife and stabbed the 38-year-old woman. A 40-year-old woman then struck the 50-year-old woman with a blunt object. Shortly afterward, a man is believed to have discharged a firearm, striking the 50-year-old woman.
Both the 38-year-old woman and the 50-year-old woman were transported to hospital by EHS with non-life-threatening injuries.
Evelyn Patricia Paul, 38, of Paq’tnkek First Nation, has been charged with:
- Attempted Murder without Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Failure to Comply with Probation Order (two counts)
Dean Thomas Earl Ross, 38, of Paq’tnkek First Nation, has been charged with:
- Attempted Murder with Firearm
- Pointing a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Weapons Possession Contrary to Order and Failure to Surrender Authorization
Sarah Emily Paul, 40, of Paq’tnkek First Nation, has been charged with Assault with a Weapon.
The investigation is ongoing.

-RCMP arrest two men after recovering stolen vehicle in Shubenacadie
East Hants District RCMP has arrested two men following the recovery of a stolen vehicle in Shubenacadie.
On July 22, at approximately 1:50 p.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment responded to a report of a stolen Honda Civic from a gas station in the 6700 block of Hwy. 2 in Enfield. Officers learned the owner had left the vehicle running while entering the business. When they returned, the vehicle was gone.
The owner’s cell phone, which had been left inside the Civic, helped officers trace its location. The car was tracked to an area on Hwy. 215 in Shubenacadie before a crash notification was received. East Hants RCMP later located the phone in a ditch.
At approximately 4:45 p.m., the stolen Honda was observed at an address on Mitchell Rd. in Shubenacadie. Officers attended and observed two men exiting the vehicle before they fled on foot.
The passenger was arrested after a short foot pursuit. The driver was later located near Hwy. 102 and arrested.
The passenger, a 28-year-old man from Truro, was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Shubenacadie Provincial Court at a later date.
The driver, Luke Alexander Jacquard, 23, of Beaver Bank, has been charged with:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Resisting Arrest
- Breach of Probation (two counts)
Jacquard appeared in Shubenacadie Provincial Court on July 23 and was released on conditions. He’s scheduled to return to court on September 14.

RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment arrested three impaired drivers in separate driving incidents.
On July 23, at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers responded to a report of a Chevrolet pickup truck swerving into oncoming traffic in the 3200 block of Hwy. 2 in Fall River. The complainant followed from a safe distance and provided updates to police until officers arrived.
An officer stopped the pickup on Rocky Lake Dr. near the Hwy. 107 overpass. The driver displayed signs of impairment and was arrested.
The 26-year-old man from Dartmouth was transported to Lower Sackville RCMP Detachment where he refused to provide a breath sample.
He was issued summary offence tickets for Driving While License Suspended and No Insurance before he was released from police custody. He’s scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date.
Later that evening, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in the drive-thru of a restaurant in the 500 block of Sackville Dr. in Lower Sackville. Officers learned a Dodge Ram had been swerving into oncoming traffic before hitting a curb as it entered the restaurant parking lot.
Officers located the Dodge on Old Beaver Bank Rd. and initiated a traffic stop. The driver was asked to provide a roadside breath sample, which resulted in a “fail.”
The driver, a 69-year-old man from Beaver Bank, was transported to the Lower Sackville RCMP Detachment where he provided two breath samples registering 120 mg% each. He was released and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date.
On July 24, at approximately 1 a.m., RCMP, fire services and EHS responded to a single-vehicle crash on Sandstone Dr. in Hatchet Lake. Officers learned a Mazda 3 was in the ditch and the driver appeared to be impaired. A second caller reported seeing the same vehicle driving on the wrong side of the roadway.
Officers arrived on scene and located the driver in the care of EHS. An officer spoke with the driver, who exhibited signs of impairment. A roadside breath sample was obtained, which resulted in a “fail.”
The 37-year-old woman of Timberlea was arrested for impaired driving and was transported to the Tantallon RCMP Detachment where she provided two breath samples registering 220 mg% each.
She was released and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court at a later date.
The RCMP thanks members of the public for reporting these incidents.
