RCMP charge man after serious assault of a youth in Yarmouth

Yarmouth Town RCMP has charged a man in connection with a serious assault that occurred in Yarmouth.

On July 19, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Yarmouth Town RCMP and Yarmouth Rural RCMP responded to reports of an altercation on a trail near Clements Ave.

Officers learned that two youths were walking in the area when they were approached by a man. A verbal confrontation ensued and escalated into an assault on one of the youths.

The youth was transported to hospital by EHS with life-threatening injuries.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene and transported to hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He later assaulted police officers while in custody.

Jordan Scott Surette, of Yarmouth, has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Uttering Threats Against a Person
  • Assaulting a Peace Officer (four counts)
  • Mischief Under $5,000

Surette was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Barrington Provincial Court on July 23.

Another man, Joel Thistle-Wallace, 19, was also on the trail and acting belligerent. He was arrested and has been charged with Failing to Comply with a Release Order.

Yarmouth Town RCMP is leading the ongoing investigation with support from Yarmouth Rural RCMP and RCMP Forensic Identification Services.

Police investigate arson

Police are investigating an arson that occurred in Halifax this morning.

On July 22 at approximately 2:50 a.m., Halifax Regional Police and Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency responded to a fire at an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Brunswick Street in Halifax.

When officers arrived, a second arson scene was located at the adjoining apartment building. A fire was set in disposal bins located in the stairwells at both scenes. The smoke from the fire caused the sprinkler systems to activate causing damage and flooding to several units as a result. There were no physical injuries reported.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police investigate home invasion

Halifax Regional Police is investigating a home invasion that occurred yesterday in Dartmouth.

On July 21, shortly after 7 p.m., officers responded to a report of a home invasion on Trenholme Street.

It was reported that a suspect forced his way into the home, assaulted and threatened the victim with a firearm before fleeing the scene in the victim’s vehicle.

The victim was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries by Emergency Health Services.

The victim’s stolen vehicle was recovered by the Halifax Regional Police; however, the suspect was not located at that time.

The investigation is in the early stages and is being led by the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division’s General Investigation Section with assistance from the Forensic Identification Section.
