SiRT Investigating Fatality Following Police Involved Pursuit

The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating a police pursuit in Havre Boucher, Nova Scotia. Following the pursuit, there was a single vehicle collision that resulted in the death of the driver.
Preliminary information suggests:
- On the night of July 18, 2026 a member of the RCMP attempted to pull over a vehicle on Cape Jack Road.
- The driver of the vehicle did not comply and fled police.
- While fleeing from Police, the vehicle went off the road and crashed.
- The driver of the vehicle was an adult male who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation. Antigonish County District RCMP has referred the investigation of a fatal crash to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).
During the evening of July 18, officers were conducting proactive patrols on Hwy. 4 near Monastery for an impaired driving initiative.
At approximately 11:20 p.m., an officer was on patrol and located a vehicle on Cape Jack Rd. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle fled. In the interest of public safety, the officer disengaged the emergency lights and did not pursue the vehicle.
Shortly after, the officer observed that the vehicle left the road and crashed in the ditch. The officer immediately attended and provided first aid while awaiting EHS and other first responders.
The driver, a 19-year-old Havre Boucher man who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Antigonish County District RCMP has referred the matter to SiRT. SiRT independently investigates all serious incidents which arise from the actions of police in Nova Scotia. There does not have to be an allegation of wrongdoing.
Given the matter is now being investigated by SiRT, the RCMP will respectfully refrain from discussing further details.
