Police charge man with theft of motor vehicle
On May 30 at approximately 8:20 p.m., officers responded to a report of a theft of a vehicle that occurred in the 100 block of Ochterloney Street in Dartmouth. At approximately 9:50 p.m., officers observed the vehicle travelling on Kempt Road in Halifax. Officers activated their emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop at which time a male driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Ater a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The vehicle was recovered and later returned to the owner.
Dustin MacDonald, 29 is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court today to face charges of:
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.00
- Motor vehicle theft
- Obstruct peace officer/resist arrest
- Failure or refusal to comply with demand for testing
- Failure to comply with condition of release order (x2)
MacDonald was also issued a ticket for driving a motor vehicle with a revoked license.

Police charge man with firearms offences following hit and run
On May 31 at approximately 3:10 a.m., officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle hit and run that occurred on Blowers Street in Halifax. The caller reported that a man driving an SUV struck her vehicle’s side mirror and didn’t stop. Officers quickly located the vehicle on Quinpool Road, activated their emergency lights and sirens and conducted a traffic stop. Officers arrested the driver without incident. While searching the vehicle, officers located and seized a loaded handgun and ammunition.
Taevon Downey, 25, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court to face charges of:
- Failure to stop after an accident
- Dangerous operation of a conveyance
- Store firearm or restricted weapon contrary to regulations
- Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace
- Carrying concealed a weapon
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a firearm in a vehicle
- Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
- Possession of a firearm-no license/certificate
- Possession of a prohibited device or ammunition obtained by crime
- Tampering with serial no. on firearm
Downey was issued an impaired, 7-day provincial suspension of his driver’s license as well.
The initial caller was also issued an impaired, 7-day provincial suspension of their license for having blood alcohol content between 50 mg% and 79 mg%.
- **** RCMP ReleaseTraffic stop leads to seizure of illegal tobacco and cannabis
RCMP Southeast Traffic Services seized a quantity of illegal cannabis and unstamped tobacco and charged the driver following a traffic stop near Goffs.
On May 28, at approximately 10:18 a.m., an officer was conducting traffic enforcement on Hwy. 102 when they observed a pickup truck with front tinted windows. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the Dodge Ram.
During the stop, the officer observed multiple cases of unstamped tobacco in the vehicle. The driver was safely arrested for possession of unstamped tobacco under the Excise Act.
In a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers seized the unstamped tobacco, including approximately 60,000 cigarettes and 17,000 cigars, along with illegal dried and edible cannabis.
The 38-year-old driver from Millbrook was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear in court at a future date to face charges under the Cannabis Act, Excise Act, Revenue Act, and Criminal Code. The vehicle, a 2022 Dodge Ram 1500, was seized under the Excise Act.
The investigation is ongoing and is being assisted by the Nova Scotia Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco Division.
