RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division charges man with firearms offences and public mischief after false report of a shooting
The RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division has charged a man with firearms offences and public mischief after an investigation determined he made a false report.
On November 13, at approximately 3:45 a.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment and EHS responded to a report of an injured man in the parking lot of a business in the 0-100 block of Forest Hill Pkwy. Upon arrival, officers were told by the man that he had been shot. Officers provided first aid until EHS arrived and transported the 31-year-old man to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A search warrant was later executed at the man’s residence on Hugh Allen Dr. in Cole Harbour. Police seized a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition, cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a quantity of cash.
On April 3, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the RCMP/HRP Integrated Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant at a home in the 100 block of Walker Ave., in Lower Sackville, in relation to the ongoing investigation. The same 31-year-old man, along with a 28-year-old woman, were arrested. Police seized a semi-automatic rifle and ammunition from the property.
The woman was released pending a scheduled court appearance in Dartmouth Provincial Court.
Kyler David Benight has been charged with:
- Careless Use of Firearm (three counts)
- Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose (three counts)
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm (three counts)
- Possession of Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized (three counts)
- Possession of a Weapon Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized (two counts)
- Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition (three counts)
- Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Commission of an Offence (three counts)
- Public Mischief
- Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (cocaine)
Benight remains in custody with a scheduled appearance in Dartmouth Provincial Court on April 9.

Annapolis County District RCMP is investigating a head-on collision.
On April 5 at approximately 9:35 p.m., RCMP officers and other first responders attended a call of a collision between a Kia Rio and Jeep Wrangler on Hwy. 1 in Clementsport.
Officers located the driver of the Kia Rio, a youth, and noted that they showed signs of impairment by alcohol. They were arrested on scene and later released to be transported by hospital by EHS for assessment of non-life-threatening injuries.
A passenger in the Kia, also a youth, as well as the driver, and only occupant, of the Jeep were also transported to hospital by EHS. All reported non-life-threatening injuries.
This collision is still under investigation as officers continue to assess and analyse factors that contributed to the collision, including impairment by alcohol. Charges related to impaired operation or other driving offences may be considered based on the outcome of the investigation.
Traffic on Hwy. 1 was impacted while first responders were on scene. Officers appreciated that other drivers paid close attention to temporary lane closures as they conductedt heir investigation.
Impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk. When someone chooses to drive while impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or drugs, they endanger themselves, their passengers, and the entire community. To report an impaired driver, call 911.
- PoliceYarmouth Town RCMP charges man after two suspicious fires
Yarmouth Town RCMP has charged a man after two fires were located and extinguished less than an hour apart at the same building in Yarmouth.
On April 7 at approximately 6:40 a.m., RCMP and fire services attended a report of a fire outside of a residential building on Cliff St. Officers found that a small fire at the front of the building had been extinguished before their arrival.
Less than an hour later, at approximately 7:25 a.m., a second fire was reported at the same building, this time at the back. The second fire caused damage to the building, which contains multiple apartments. Based on evidence gathered on scene, responding firefighters notified police that they believed the fire was intentionally set.
No injuries were reported associated to either fire.
Based on surveillance video in the area, officers from the Yarmouth Town RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) identified a person of interest. During proactive patrols, officers located the person and he was safely arrested. At the time of the arrest, he was found to be in possession of a lighter and the officers noted a strong odour of gasoline.
Nathan LeBlanc, 30, of Yarmouth, is charged with Arson – Disregard for Human Life (two counts) and Failure to Comply with Release Order (two counts). He remains in custody pending a court appearance on April 9 at Barrington Provincial Court.
