Antigonish County District RCMP charges two men after flight from police
Antigonish County District RCMP has charged two men who fled from police in Pomquet Forks.
On January 20, at approximately 11:20 a.m., an RCMP officer attempted to complete a traffic stop on a Ford F-150 with an unattached Alberta licence plate and heavy front-end damage.
The driver of the F-150 immediately took off down a dead-end road and crossed a river, getting the truck stuck on the opposite side of the waterway.
The driver and passenger exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
The officer recognized the truck’s passenger as an individual wanted for possession of a firearm, assault with weapon, and other offences. The driver, who was not known to the officer, was believed to be in possession of a handgun.
In the interest of public safety, an Alert Ready emergency alert was issued to Antigonish County.
Pictou County District RCMP, Guysborough County District RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Services, the RCMP Emergency Response Team, and a drone were deployed to assist in locating the men.
At approximately 12:50 p.m., one man was taken into custody. The other man was arrested at about 1:50 p.m.
No firearms were located.
The driver, 48-year-old George William Bowles from Heatherton, is facing the following charges:
- Flight from Police
- Dangerous Operation of Conveyance
- Operation of Conveyance While Prohibited
- Obstruction
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
The passenger, 33-year-old Jerry Lee Ledrew from Paq’tnkek First Nation, has been charged with:
- Assault with a Weapon
- Pointing a Firearm
- Using an Imitation Weapon in the Commission of an Offence
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Possession of Weapon Contrary to Order
Both Bowles and Ledrew appeared in Antigonish Provincial Court on January 21.
- TRAFFIC RCMP arrests man after vehicle crash in Moser River RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment has arrested a man after a vehicle crash and property offences in Moser River. On January 20, at approximately 3:45 a.m., RCMP officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 28900 block of Hwy. 7. Officers learned that a man wearing a camouflage jacket had been banging on the doors of a residence. While en route, officers received a second report of a vehicle in a ditch near Church Loop and Hwy. 7. They located a Honda Civic suspended over a deep ditch. The Civic appeared to have travelled eastbound before leaving the roadway and crossing Church Loop Rd. No one was found at the scene, although evidence indicated the driver had injuries. Patrols east of the crash site led officers to fresh footprints in the snow, and a garage with two smashed windows. Footprints continued back toward Hwy. 7. In the 29600 block, officers located another vehicle with its door open and fresh footprints nearby. A passing motorist then reported a man walking in the roadway approximately 1.5 km east of the officer’s location. As short time later, investigators located an injured man wearing a camouflage jacket walking in the west bound lane of the roadway. The man was arrested, and EHS attended to provide medical assistance. Officers determined the man was the driver of the crashed vehicle and responsible for the damage to the garage and other vehicles along his travelled route. A roadside breath test was administered, resulting in a fail. The man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where a blood demand was given. The 35-year-old Moser River man is facing charges of: Impaired Driving Break and Enter (two counts) Mischief (five counts) He was released from police custody and will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date. The investigation remains ongoing.
