Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating a fatal fire in Sydney Mines / A man arrested in connection to a suspicious death on November 23rd faces a charge of Second Degree Murder

**** Via Cape Breton Police Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating a fatal fire in Sydney Mines Police were called to an apartment complex on Main Street in Sydney Mines at approximately 9:00 PM November 22nd, where Cape Breton Regional Fire Services was on scene of a structure fully engulfed in fire. After the fire was extinguished, a deceased person was located inside the remains of the structure. The Fire Marshall’s Office attended the scene with assistance from Forensic Identification officers and Investigators, to determine the cause of the fire which is being treated as suspicious. The deceased has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and to confirm identity. Police continue to investigate, speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage; anyone with information about the fire is asked to call police at 902-563-5151 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. - A man arrested in connection to a suspicious death on November 23rd faces a charge of Second Degree Murder Sluaghan (pronounced Sloan) MacDonald, 40 and from Sydney Mines, was remanded to the Cape Breton Correctional Centre following investigation by the Cape Breton Regional Police Major Crime Unit, with assistance from Forensic Identification officers and the Medical Examiner’s Office. At approximately 1:14 AM officers responded to a 911 call of a female in medical distress. The female was taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and later succumbed to her injuries; one male was arrested at the scene. Police are treating this as an isolated incident between persons known to each other with no further risk to public safety. Our thoughts are with the victim's family during this difficult time.
