Turtle nests continue to open up across the Maritimes, and residents are encouraged to keep the nests safe!
Turtles nest early in the summer, and in 90 days from nesting, the hatchlings begin to emerge!
All turtles found in Nova Scotia are considered at risk, and nesting sites are constantly at risk of destruction. In October 2022, a path was built over a painted turtle nesting site at Russell Lake. Despite residents coming forward with evidence of turtles nesting in the area, the project was completed by HRM to install a second path in the area. According to residents, there have been no nesting turtles documented there since. Turtles instinct Ly nest where they were hatched, travelling at times a great distance and through dangerous conditions to nest. If the area has been destroyed, it will likely end generations of nesting in the area.
It is important for residents in known nesting areas to be wary of little dinosaurs in the area. Watch for turtles on roads and paths trying to cross and please keep pets away. Check in with the NS Turtle Patrol to learn more, report nests, and keep our shelled friends alive and well!
