Municipality recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Treaty Day and Mi’kmaw History Month
The Halifax Regional Municipality invites residents to join in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Treaty Day and Mi’kmaw History Month on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
The Halifax Regional Municipality is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaw people. The municipality acknowledges the Peace and Friendship Treaties signed in this territory and recognizes that we are all Treaty People.
Halifax City Hall will be lit orange on Monday, Sept. 29 to Wednesday, Oct. 1 to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and in recognition of Mi’kmaw History Month.
On Sept. 30, attend National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Day activities for all ages hosted by the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre taking place at 2021 Brunswick Street, Suite 209 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m., residents are invited to attend a flag raising ceremony at Grand Parade. The event will include a reading of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Treaty Day Proclamation by Mayor Andy Fillmore.
October is Mi’kmaw History Month, beginning with Treaty Day on Wednesday, Oct. 1. This year’s theme is A’tukwemk aq A’tukowinu’k – Storytelling and Storytellers. It honours the distinctive stories of Mi’kmaw people—stories shaped by the land and waters, rooted in Mi’kma’ki, and passed down through generations.

-Municipal service level adjustments for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following service level adjustments for Tuesday, Sept. 30 as a result of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours
There will be no change to municipal solid waste collection services or facility hours of operation. To ensure collection, residents are asked to place materials curbside, contained and secured to prevent access from wildlife, prior to 7 a.m. on collection day.
Residents can sign up for weekly collection reminders and service alerts, as well as print a calendar customized to their address, on our website.
A mobile Household Special Waste Depot will be held on Sept. 27 at the NSCC Institute of Technology Campus (Halifax) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The permanent Household Special Waste Depot located at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive is also open on Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services
Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney Ferry will be operating on holiday service on Tuesday, Sept. 30. There will be no Woodside Ferry service.
The Alderney Ferry will run at half-hour frequency on with the first trip departing from the Alderney Ferry Terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final trip departing from the Halifax Ferry Terminal at 11:45 p.m.
All buses will pull over at 2:15 p.m. for a moment of silence in memory of the children who never returned home from residential schools, survivors, and their families and communities.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services
All municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Residents are advised to contact their respective facility for operating hours and program information.

Parking
On-street paid parking will be free on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Drivers are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no stopping, accessible parking spaces and no parking zones.
Customer Contact Centres
The 311 Contact Centre will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 30 for full service. Urgent calls can still be reported during the holiday. Regular operating hours will resume on Monday, Oct. 1.

Alderney Gate, Bayers Road and Musquodoboit Harbour Customer Service centres provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 30 and will reopen for regular business hours on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
