A good news story from Nova Scotia!
On August 6, a 12-foot pilot whale was reported stranded in Sydney River. Our fishery officers from the Maritimes Region, Sydney detachment, responded and tried to encourage the free swimming animal downstream into the harbour. After multiple attempts the team ceased operations to prevent stressing the whale.
The following day, fishery officers returned to the scene to find the whale had not made its way out of the river as they had hoped, and had beached itself. Thankfully, they were prepared to take action. Through the use of their whale rescue pontoons and help from Marine Animal Response Society the officers were able to slowly move the whale down river and release it in the outer harbour.
This was a perfect example of the importance of proper training, equipment, and teamwork. We understand the urge many people have to help; however, the best outcomes result from letting the experts do their job.
