Curbside Give Away Weekend and Mobile Household Special Waste event
This year’s Curbside Give Away Weekend will take place on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.
Residents are encouraged to place unwanted items at their curbs for prospective treasure hunters to haul away. Only place items at the curb that are free and clearly marked with a “FREE” sign.
All unclaimed items must be removed by dusk on Sunday. Consider donating unclaimed items to charitable organizations and remember to put any garbage material out on your regular garbage day and week. Regular curbside garbage limits apply.
Promote your free items and plan your treasure hunt in advance by pinning and viewing available items on the Curbside Give Away map posted at www.halifax.ca/curbside. Residents are encouraged to pin the location and details of items to make it easier for people to find. Share your finds and connect with other treasure hunters on Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtag #hfxcurbside.
This event will take place rain or shine.
Mobile Household Special Waste events
Residents looking to dispose of household special waste not acceptable for curbside collection can bring their materials to the following upcoming Mobile Household Special Waste Depot events:
When: Saturday, June 14 Where: Sackville Transit Terminal | 7 Walker Avenue, Lower Sackville
When: Saturday, June 21 Where: West Bedford Park and Ride | 120 Innovation Drive, Bedford
The mobile drop-off depots will be in operation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will take place rain or shine. Business waste is not permitted.
Materials accepted include:
- leftover corrosive cleaners
- pesticides/herbicides
- single use vapes (all in one) and rechargeable vape batteries
- ensure cartridges are removed
- gasoline
- jerry cans will not be given back to residents at mobile events
- fuel oil and used motor oil
- alternatively, residents can find a retail collection site with Atlantic Used Oil Management Association
- solvents
- thinners
- pharmaceuticals and drugs (or return to pharmacy)
- sharps/needles are not accepted at the depot
- any full or partially full aerosol containers, or aerosol containers that held hazardous waste
- alternatively, residents can find a retail collection site with Atlantic Used Oil Management Association or www.productcare.org/recycling-locator
- barbecue propane tanks
- small propane cylinders (e.g. camp stoves and propane torches)
- batteries
- alternatively, residents can find a retail drop-off location on www.recycleyourbatteries.ca
- leftover liquid paint in labeled paint cans
- paint and empty paint cans may also be returned to any Enviro-Depot.
- CFL and fluorescent bulbs
- light bulbs and lighting products can also be dropped off at select locations, find a location near you at www.productcare.org/recycling-locator
The municipality also operates a permanent Household Special Waste Depot at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive. Drop-off times are on most Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The depot is open only to residents of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Business waste is not permitted.
