In photos - A life saving and early mother's day gift for a mama porcupine and baby came today as a rescue ended at Hope for Wildlife
Earlier today, Suriname, a volunteer member of Halifax SAR, was called to a different kind of Nd of rescue, but not one she's a stranger to.
Having previously volunteered for Hope for Wildlife, Suriname received a call from family of a porcupine who appeared sickly. Responding to the call, she quickly found the porcupine laying in brush. She quickly noted the appearance of mange and a plan for safely capturing the adult porcupine began.
However, to the surprise of all, not far away from the sheltered porcupine, a baby was spotted! This created a situation where two porcupines had to be rescued. A closer inspection of the baby revealed light mange and ticks, and not being old enough to be separated from mama, the rescue expanded.
During a brief porcupine vs human game of gotcha, mama was safely captured and secured. Now for the baby, who proved to be a hit more of a handful. However, using resources on hand, the feisty youth also was packaged for safe transport.
Arriving at Hope, a team met Suriname and were updated on the new arrivals condition.
They were taken inside for an immediate health check and a plan will be made ready by the amazing vet staff who will see the care of this mama and her youth to treat the mange and parasites. The team will care for the little family, who are very likely to stay and be released together after treatment.
