Ahhhh...Christmas. The holiday season is a very busy one at the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic! There are certain things we see a lot of over the holidays, so here are a few of the most common ones.
- Vomiting & diarrhea. Turkey, gravy, ham.. sometimes owners feed it to their pets and sometimes pets help themselves, but the end result is usually the same. Not all pets can handle rich food.
- Raisin toxicity. Raisins, grapes and currants are all toxic to dogs, but dogs don't know that.
- Other toxicities. Sugar free gum, medications, chocolate ( So. Much. Chocolate!!) ...all of these can be very harmful and even fatal for our pets. Make sure guests keep purses and bags out of reach.
- Ribbon, string, tinsel ingestion. This one is mostly for the kitties! Some cats just cannot resist chewing on ribbons and strings, which can be very harmful if swallowed.
- Cannabis ingestion or exposure. For most pets, a little goes a long way. Animals are very sensitive to THC.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! But with a few precautions we can make sure our pets have a safe and happy holiday. Rule of thumb : when in doubt, keep it out of reach
