Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE) is dedicated to saving lives and protecting property through fire prevention, fire suppression, and public education. HRFE is committed to continuous learning and superior customer service. How do I apply to be a volunteer firefighter and what is the process? What is it like to be a volunteer firefighter? As a volunteer firefighter, you’ll start by learning. The first step is to successfully complete HRFE’s Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Training, in which you’ll learn the basic skills required to respond to emergencies. After that, you can expect an average of 25–35 hours per month of additional training, emergency responses, and meetings. You will also be expected to: perform firefighting duties and other related work as required respond to and work in all types of weather work in a safe manner, in accordance with your training participate in community events as required carry a pager (provided) and respond to emergencies when available participate in weekly training be conscientious and dependable What are the benefits of being a volunteer firefighter? What qualifications do I need to be a volunteer firefighter?
