Tattoo Artist Raises More Than $2,500 for Cape Breton SPCA
Vanessa Darling, a tattoo apprentice at Rowe’s Tattoo, raised $2,560 for the Cape Breton SPCA through animal-themed tattoos. In five weeks, Darling completed 64 tattoos in support of the SPCA. For every animal-themed tattoo, $40 was donated to help local pets in need.
Darling was inspired to help after the Nova Scotia SPCA rescued 85 cats and kittens last November. The majority of the cats came from two hoarding situations in Cape Breton and Pictou. To raise funds for homeless pets, Darling offered a flash sale in December. The first day it was announced, 30 people booked appointments. The fundraiser was extended to January 8th, 2021 due to popularity.
“We are grateful for Vanessa’s generosity and everyone who participated in this special fundraiser,” said Ryan Toomey, Cape Breton Development Officer at the Nova Scotia SPCA. “The COVID-19 crisis has been extremely difficult. With no government funding for our shelters, unique and creative fundraisers like this provide lifesaving support.”
“I am beyond happy with how much money was raised and hope it is just the beginning,” said Vanessa Darling, fundraiser organizer and local tattoo artist. “I am hoping to make this an annual thing. Any bit helps knowing it is all going to an amazing cause. I’ll do whatever I can when I can.”
