Update on late fees and support available for Nova Scotia Power customers
**** NSP Release
Update on late fees and support available for Nova Scotia Power customers
As you are aware, late fees have not been applied to outstanding power bills since the cyber-attack at Nova Scotia Power last year. As billing returns to normal, we are letting customers know that late fees will resume October 1, 2026.
We are also announcing new support for customers struggling with their power bills. Please see the news release attached.
Below you will find a quote from our Director of Customer Care, Chris Lanteigne, as well as some additional information.

“Providing flexibility and waiving late fees on power bills after the cyber-incident was the right thing to do for our customers. We committed to providing at least 60 days’ notice before reintroducing them. Today we are confirming that late fees will resume on October 1, 2026. We know some customers may need help to manage their balance. Our team is here to support with flexible, interest-free payment plans, which spreads costs evenly over 12 months, and extended options of up to 24 months.”   - Chris Lanteigne, Director of Customer Care, Nova Scotia Power.

Additional Information
  • We are also expanding support to customers who may be struggling with their power bills.
  • Through our Grassroots Grants program, we're announcing a new Community Energy Fund which will match the assistance provided by participating organizations, helping more customers access the support they need.
  • We will work with community organizations across Nova Scotia to help connect eligible customers with financial support for their Nova Scotia Power bills.
  • Additional details about the new Community Energy Fund, including application information, will be shared in the coming weeks as we work  with community partners to shape the program and ensure it reaches those who need it most.
  • Nova Scotia Power continues to contribute $300,000 a year to the HEAT Fund to help eligible customers with heating costs each winter.
  • We have also introduced a pilot program that removes late fees for customers receiving financial assistance through participating charities and non-profit organizations, and we have received approval to continue that program for 18-months.
  • Nova Scotia Power contributes more than $2 million annually to community-based initiatives, charitable organizations, and local programs throughout Nova Scotia. Community donations are funded by our parent company, Emera, not through customer rates.
