This was posted by the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission in regards to possible changes in ferry service at Alderney Landing "Dear Mayor Fillmore and Halifax Regional Municipal Council, On behalf of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission (DDBC), I am writing to express our strong concern regarding any proposed reduction in Alderney Ferry service from 15 minute intervals to 30 minute intervals. The Alderney Ferry is not simply a transportation link—it is critical economic infrastructure connecting two of the municipality’s most important commercial districts. Reliable, frequent ferry service supports the daily movement of workers, residents, and visitors between Downtown Dartmouth and Downtown Halifax. It sustains local businesses, enables workforce mobility, and contributes meaningfully to the overall economic vitality of both downtowns. Reducing service frequency risks creating friction in that connection. Even small increases in wait times can discourage use, particularly for discretionary trips such as shopping, dining, and attending events. This would have a direct and negative impact on small businesses that rely on steady foot traffic and cross-harbour visitation. At a time when we are collectively working to strengthen downtown recovery, reduce car dependency, and support climate goals through transit use, maintaining frequent and convenient ferry service should be a priority.
