Free “Listen to Your Heart” stethoscope event tomorrow in Dartmouth
Nova Scotia Health and Heart Valve Voice Canada are hosting a “Listen to Your Heart” event tomorrow where healthcare professionals will check the health of your heart and raise awareness about heart valve disease. Heart valve disease is a serious but often underdiagnosed condition, especially in adults 60+. Early detection can make a life-changing difference. At last fall’s event, more than 200 people had their hearts listened to, which resulted in 11 murmurs being detected and five echocardiograms being performed. As well, a significant case was discovered and a patient will now get the follow-up care they need because they attended this event. Trained healthcare professionals will be on-site tomorrow to provide free stethoscope checks for adults who do not have a pre-existing heart condition. Participants will also receive educational resources about heart valve disease, including common symptoms, risk factors and available treatment options. If a potential concern is detected, a physician will provide a requisition for follow-up care. Any required follow-up will be triaged and scheduled as needed.
