Proof! Eel Grass meadow verified in Dartmouth Cove!
One of the most exciting discoveries during our second BioBlitz was the presence of a sizable eelgrass meadow in Dartmouth Cove. Eelgrass is designated as an ecologically significant species and is protected under the Federal Fisheries act.
Eelgrass restoration is becoming a major focus across Atlantic Canada and beyond, recognized as a powerful tool for protecting coastlines, strengthening marine ecosystems, and capturing and storing carbon (“blue carbon”).
It should be noted that protecting existing, thriving eelgrass is far easier, and far more effective, than trying to restore it once it’s gone.
Eelgrass meadows provide critical nursery habitat for fish and invertebrates, stabilize sediment, improve water quality, and help ecosystems recover from disturbance. They are foundation species, meaning entire underwater communities depend on them.
What we documented is not empty water. It is living habitat. And places where eelgrass is already present deserve protection, not infill and destruction.
Email DFO and ask them to reject ARCP’s application to infill Dartmouth Cove and protect this precious habitat.
