Security exercise to be conducted at Canadian Forces Base Halifax
Halifax Regional Municipality residents are to be advised that there will be a sustained security response exercise conducted across multiple Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Halifax properties during the week of February 9-13, 2026. The timing and specific locations of the exercise will not be disseminated to ensure the authenticity of the response and the effectiveness of the exercise.
The annual exercise, which takes place during Security Awareness Week, provides CFB Halifax personnel an opportunity to practice and refine security procedures on Base property while ensuring force protection measures are consistent with Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence policies and regulations. It is also an opportunity to improve employee awareness of CFB Halifax security practices.
During the exercise, members of the public who live, work, or transit regularly in the vicinity of CFB Halifax properties may observe heightened activity from emergency response vehicles, military police, security boats, and exercise participants. Exercise procedures may include limited personal property searches; Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (drone) activity; military personnel stationed at property access points (weapons carried); and participants acting in a suspicious manner during exercise scenarios. All scenario-based training will be undertaken by actors and supervised by exercise controllers. Safety teams will monitor and control activities at all locations. Emergency services to the local community will not be limited in any way by this exercise, and any inconvenience to the public is regretted.
Security Awareness Week encourages government departments to promote security practices and increases employee awareness of departmental security services. Security awareness is a key element of the departmental security program under the Policy on Government Security.
**REMINDER: Under the Defence Controlled Access Area Regulations of the National Defence Act, as a condition of being given access to any defence establishment, work for defence or materiel, every person shall, on the demand of a security guard, submit to a search of his person or personal property while entering or exiting any such place or materiel or any restricted area within such place or materiel.
