Clearing Hydrants

After three snowfall events in just eight days, many fire hydrants across our region are buried and difficult to access. Today, our members are out in their districts shovelling hydrants by hand to ensure they’re ready when they’re needed.

Quick access to a fire hydrant saves critical time during a fire — time that can make a real difference for people and property.

Important to know:
• Halifax Water is responsible for snow clearing around public fire hydrants
• That said, residents are encouraged to help out by clearing hydrants near their homes if they can do so safely
🛠️ If you’re shovelling a hydrant:
✔ Clear a path from the street
✔ Clear about 3 feet (1 metre) around the hydrant on all sides
It may not be your responsibility — but your help can save time in an emergency and help keep your neighbourhood safer.
