Cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service — driven by repeated occupational exposures fire fighters face over the course of their careers. These risks don’t come from a single call, but from cumulative exposure on the fireground, during overhaul, at vehicle and wildland incidents, and even back at the station. Throughout January, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), in partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, highlights practical, proven steps to reduce cancer risk and protect long-term health. This week’s focus is understanding the risk. Knowing where cancer-causing exposures come from is the first step toward prevention — for the fire fighters who protect our communities every day.
