Upcoming traffic disruptions in support of improvements at the intersection of Burnside and Commodore drives
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of upcoming traffic delays at the intersection of Burnside Drive, Commodore Drive and Ronald Smith Avenue.
These traffic delays are required to facilitate intersection and active transportation improvements in this area. This work is expected to begin during the week of Sept. 21 and is anticipated to be completed in late fall or early winter 2026.
Time: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. for night work and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for weekend work
Work details: This project includes intersection upgrades and active transportation improvements designed to enhance safety, accessibility and traffic operations, including:
Upgrades to the intersection to improve traffic flow and safety
New and improved sidewalks, pathways and pedestrian crossings
New traffic signals and street lighting to improve visibility and safety
New flashing warning signs on Burnside Drive to alert drivers when traffic ahead will be required to stop
Updates to road markings and signage
Landscaping
Infrastructure improvements that will support the future extension of the multi-use pathway along Burnside Drive beyond its current endpoint at Commodore Drive
This work aligns with the Moving Better goals outlined in the 2026–2030 Strategic Plan by improving transportation safety, accessibility, connectivity and network efficiency for all users. The project also aligns with the Road Safety Strategy and Active Transportation Priorities Plan through investments in safer intersections, enhanced pedestrian infrastructure and improved connections within the active transportation network.
Traffic impact: Most project work will take place overnight and on weekends to reduce impacts on daytime traffic volumes. Traffic impacts are expected throughout the duration of the project and may include the following:
A mix of two-way and stop-and-go traffic with lane reductions while work is underway.
Temporary modifications to turning lanes while work is underway.
Short-term closures of individual lanes or turning lanes as construction progresses.
Some stages of work may require short-term full road closures to ensure the safety of residents, road users and construction crews. These closures will be planned and communicated in advance.
Local access and emergency access will be maintained at all times.
Drivers should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.
Sidewalk impact: Sections of sidewalks may be temporarily closed as work progresses. Marked detours will be in place.
Active transportation impact: Access to the multi-use path along Burnside Drive may be temporarily impacted while work is underway.
