The origin of the Jack o' lantern

26663DYK? The origin of the Jack o' lantern is from the Irish folk legend of "Stingy Jack," who tricked the Devil and was cursed to roam the Earth forever after death

To ward off his wandering soul, the Irish carved menacing faces into turnips and potatoes, which became known as "Jack of the Lanterns".  Irish immigrants later brought this custom to North America, where they started using the native and more readily available pumpkin for carving.
