Municipality introduces new photography and video policy for recreation facilities

The municipality has introduced a policy to guide photography and video recording at municipal recreation facilities, with a focus on protecting privacy and safety while allowing residents to capture their experiences. The policy applies to image recording and broadcasting using photographic and digital recording technology of any form.

Photography and video recording are generally permitted in facility spaces such as arenas, gymnasiums and multi-purpose rooms.

Photography and video recording at pool facilities and fitness areas (e.g. weight rooms, fitness studios) require approval from facility staff. Additional consent requirements may also apply. Residents who are unsure whether photography or video recording is permitted are encouraged to speak with facility staff.

Photography, video recording and broadcasting are prohibited in the following areas:

  • change rooms;

  • washrooms; and

  • registration areas where personal or financial information may be visible.

Individuals who do not comply with the policy will be directed to stop recording and may be asked to leave the facility. Serious or repeated violations may result in further action.

The policy is intended to proactively address privacy, safety and comfort concerns while recognizing that residents may wish to capture photos and videos during recreational activities. The policy helps clarify where recording is permitted, where restrictions apply and when approval from facility staff is required. The municipality is committed to providing safe, welcoming and inclusive recreation spaces for all residents.

Signage will be installed at municipal recreation facilities in the coming weeks.
