It’s Fire Prevention Week!
October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week, and this year the focus is something most of us have all over our homes: lithium-ion batteries.
Phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, toys; almost every rechargeable device in your home uses one. They pack a lot of energy into a very small space, which is what makes them so useful.
But when a battery is damaged, charged incorrectly or used with the wrong equipment, it can overheat, catch fire or even explode. Battery fires can also spread very quickly and produce toxic smoke.
That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is:
Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower.
Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing some simple things you can do at home to reduce the risk, from choosing the right charger, to where you charge your devices, to knowing the warning signs of a failing battery.
And there’s a little incentive to brush up on your fire safety knowledge…
HRFE’s 2026 Fire Prevention Week Quiz is now open, with prizes for children, youth and adults, including Nintendo Switch 2 systems, AirPods Pro, an Apple Watch and LEGO.
Visit HRFE’s Fire Prevention Week page to learn more and take the quiz:

Follow along this week. A few small changes to how you charge the things you use every day can make a big difference.
