Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency trained alongside the Department of National Defence at HMC Dockyard as part of their week long large-scale disaster exercise, our scenario involved a simulated shipboard fire.
Shipboard fires present unique challenges. Restricted access, complex vessel construction, communications limitations, accountability, movement of crews and equipment, and coordination between multiple agencies can significantly affect fireground operations. This exercise allowed HRFE and DND Fire to put those systems to the test, identify operational gaps, strengthen working relationships, and inform the continued development of operational guidelines and safe work practices.
Effective interoperability is built before the emergency. We train together, test our systems and establish command relationships so that when a significant incident occurs, our crews are prepared to operate as one coordinated response.
