**** HRM Release
Curbside Giveaway Weekend and Waste Reduction Week
In celebration of Waste Reduction Week (Oct. 19-25), the Halifax Regional Municipality is hosting a series of events to help residents reduce waste, reuse household items and learn more about sustainable waste management practices.
This year, residents are encouraged to explore simple ways to reduce waste through repairing, reusing, composting and responsible disposal. Whether participating in a community repair event, taking part in Curbside Giveaway Weekend or attending an educational workshop, residents can help keep useful materials out of the landfill while supporting a more sustainable community.
Curbside Giveaway Weekend
Residents are invited to take part in Curbside Giveaway Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18, rain or shine, across the municipality.
The event gives residents an opportunity to give away usable household items for free while supporting waste reduction, reuse and environmental sustainability. Reusing items helps reduce landfill waste and strengthens community connections.
Residents can participate by placing clean, reusable items at the curb in front of their home and clearly marking them as “FREE.” Items that are not intended for the event should be kept away from the curb to avoid confusion.
Participants are reminded to only take items marked “FREE” and to obey all traffic laws when stopping or browsing.
Residents can promote available items and plan ahead by using the Curbside Giveaway map at: halifax.ca/curbside
Participants are encouraged to pin item locations and include descriptions to help others find items more easily. Community members can also share their experiences on Facebook and Instagram using #hfxcurbside.
All unclaimed items must be removed from the curb by dusk on Sunday, Oct. 18. Items can be donated or set out on a regular garbage collection day, in accordance with standard collection limits.
