Colchester County District RCMP investigating theft of multiple plaques

28446Colchester County District RCMP is investigating the theft of several historical plaques from monuments and seeking information from the public.

On October 23, officers learned that two plaques had been stolen from monuments at a provincial park on Station Rd. in Londonderry. Both plaques are approximately two feet by one foot and have information about the mining history in the area. The theft is believed to have occurred earlier in October.

Also on October 23, officers learned that a plaque had been stolen from a monument at a provincial park on MacElmon Rd. in Lower Onslow. The plaque gives information about conservation efforts that support waterfowl habitat in the area. This theft is believed to have taken place within the last three months.

Both park sites are maintained by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.

These thefts are in addition to the investigation into the stolen plaque commemorating the Ingonish-French River Portage route.

Although these investigations are ongoing, officers are aware that plaques or other historical metal items may be stolen and sold as scrap metal.

“It is disappointing to consider that these links to our cultural history are likely being stolen and possibly destroyed for this reason,” says Cst. Quinn Wall, Colchester County District RCMP. “We want to hear from anyone with information, including scrap dealers who may have awareness of these or other missing items.”

Anyone with information that could support these investigations is asked to contact Colchester County District RCMP at 902-893-6820. To remain anonymous, call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers, toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or use the P3 Tips app.

Yarmouth Town RCMP traffic stop leads to arrest and cocaine seizure

Yarmouth Town RCMP has arrested a woman after a traffic stop led to the seizure of cocaine.

On October 27 at approximately 12:45 a.m., an officer conducting proactive patrols on Main St. observed a vehicle travelling over the posted speed limit of 30 km/h. The officer confirmed with radar that the vehicle speed was over 50 km/h, then observed the car, a Hyundai Elantra, turn abruptly onto several side streets without stopping at marked stop signs, apparently in an attempt to evade the police vehicle.

The officer activated the police vehicle’s emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Pleasant St. and Forest St. The driver and only occupant stopped the car, exited, and attempted to flee on foot. She was safely arrested.

During a search incidental to arrest, officers located multiple baggies of packaged cocaine.

The driver, a 29-year-old woman from Yarmouth, was released by police on conditions pending a first court appearance scheduled for December 21 at Yarmouth Provincial Court. She will face charges related to trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and Criminal Code driving offences.
