Thatโs how many porcupine quills we removed from Fernโs face and body since she came into our care.
Porcupine quills aren't straight โ they have multiple, tiny barbs, like fishhooks. Every time Fern moved, the quills would lodge deeper into her skin. And each move brought piercing pain.
Itโs been a race against time to find and remove them all. The longer it takes to remove quills, the more chances for them to break, for small pieces to work through the skin, and reach internal organs.

She has had multiple hospital visits to remove the hundreds of quills. Fernโs road to recovery doesnโt stop at 852. Veterinarians continue to look for more. The last visit was just last week.
