Inverness County District RCMP investigates fatal collision
Inverness County District RCMP is investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Hwy. 105 near Lexington.
On August 20, at approximately 1:25 p.m., Inverness County District RCMP, fire services, and EHS responded to a report of a collision between two vehicles on Hwy. 105. The collision occurred between Long Stretch Rd. and Lake Horton Rd. Investigators learned that a Chevrolet CZT and a Jeep collided before both vehicles came to rest in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 52-year-old man from Ontario, was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Jeep, a 32-year-old woman from Eskasoni, was transported to hospital by EHS with serious injuries.
An RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the location of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
A portion of Hwy. 105 between Port Hastings and Lexington was closed for several hours and has since reopened.

Lunenburg District RCMP arrest a man and recover stolen truck and trailer
Lunenburg District RCMP safely arrested a man who stole a truck and trailer from New Minas then attempted repeatedly to flee from police through several Nova Scotia communities.
On August 21 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Kings District RCMP responded to a report of a truck stolen from New Minas. The owner reported that debit and credit cards left in the white Ford F-350 had been used in other parts of the province.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., Lunenburg District RCMP received a report that the stolen F-350 was travelling on Hwy. 103 and was now towing a camper trailer, which officers determined was previously reported stolen. Responding officers located the vehicle on Port Medway Rd. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the F-350 fled causing the camper to hit a utility truck before getting back onto Hwy. 103. In the interest of public safety, officers did not pursue the F-350 onto Hwy. 103.
RCMP Air Services was engaged to monitor the truck’s location on the highway. Bridgewater Police Service was involved while the truck passed through their jurisdiction. RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) also attended to support the investigation.
At approximately 4:00 p.m., the vehicle stopped near exit 7 and the driver fled on foot into the wooded area. The driver let several aggressive dogs out of the truck as he fled, which prevented officers and PDS from being able to immediately follow him on foot.
When officers were able to safely proceed, Lunenburg District RCMP officers and PDS located and safely arrested Jeremy Higginbotham, 36, of Billtown. He is charged with several offences including Theft of Motor Vehicle and Misuse of Credit Card. He had a first court appearance on August 22 at Bridgewater Provincial Court and remains in custody.
There were no injuries observed to the Police Service Dog or any of the dogs that were released by Higginbotham. Officers appreciated support from staff at a kennel in the area, who took custody of the dogs.
