Upcoming traffic disruptions in support of the Brunswick Street Complete Streets project
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of upcoming traffic disruptions along Brunswick Street, between Cogswell Street and Spring Garden Road, and along Sackville Street, between Market and Queen streets.
This work is needed to facilitate construction in support of the Brunswick Street Complete Streets project, which is expected to be substantially completed in December 2025, with any remaining work to be completed during the 2026 construction season.
Work details: These traffic impacts are needed to install infrastructure that will improve the area for all road users, including people driving, walking, cycling and rolling. Improvements include:
- A new landscaped public space at the foot of Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, creating a more welcoming gateway to downtown.
- Repaving of road surfaces throughout the project area.
- Upgrades to sidewalks and crosswalks to improve accessibility and safety.
- A protected two-way bike lane on the west side of Brunswick Street.
Traffic impacts: As part of this project, the following traffic impacts are expected:
- Ongoing – Aug. 11 to Sept. 8 – Intersection Closure - Brunswick and Sackville streets
- Late August – Intermittent traffic delays and pedestrian impacts at the intersection of Brunswick Street and Spring Garden Road for crosswalk safety improvements.
- Fall 2025 – Rolling nighttime closures on Brunswick Street for repaving work.
Access to businesses and residential properties will be maintained during this project.
Residents should expect traffic delays within the project area throughout the duration of the project.
More specific timing and details about each of these impacts will be shared as work progresses.

Street Closure – Gottingen Street
Location: Gottingen Street, between Almon and Macara streets Date: Tuesday, Aug. 26 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Work details: This is to accommodate utility work in the area. Traffic impact: A marked detour will be in place via Macara, Agricola and Almon streets while work is underway. Motorists should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible..
Street Closure – Hollis Street
Location: Hollis Street between Prince Street and Sackville Street
Date: Tuesday, August 26
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Work details: This closure is to facilitate the safe operation and maneuvering of equipment servicing 1645 Granville Street.
Traffic impact: The road, sidewalk and bike lane will be closed. Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users must use alternative routes.

Traffic Delay – Rocky Lake Drive
Location: Rocky Lake Drive, between Bedford Highway and Duke Street
Date/time: Sunday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday, Aug. 25 until Friday, Aug. 29 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 30 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Work details: This is to facilitate road repairs in support of the 2021-25 Regional Council Strategic Priorities Plan to establish a safe and accessible integrated mobility network.
Traffic impact: Stop-and-go traffic will be in place while this work is underway. Motorists should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.

Road Closure - Bluewater Road
Location: 230 Bluewater Road, between Larry Uteck Drive and Hammonds Plains Road
Date: Tuesday, Aug. 26 and Wednesday, Aug. 27
Time: 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26 until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27
Work Details: This closure is to facilitate underground utility work.
Traffic Impact: Detours will be in place while work is underway. Motorists should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.

Traffic Delay – Rocky Lake Drive
Location: Rocky Lake Drive, between Bedford Highway and 440 Rocky Lake Drive
Date: Sunday, Aug. 24 to Friday, Sept. 5 (daily)
Time: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. (overnight work)
Work details: This is to facilitate road repairs in support of the 2021-25 Regional Council Strategic Priorities Plan to establish a safe and accessible integrated mobility network.
Traffic impact: Stop-and-go traffic will be in place while this work is underway. Drivers should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.

Traffic Delay – Dutch Village Road
Location: Dutch Village Road, between Bayers Road and Supreme Court
Date: Tuesday, April 22 to mid-December 2025
Time: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, with weekend work as required
Work details: This work is to improve the safety and comfort of pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and drivers.
Sidewalk and bikeway upgrades: New sidewalks and bike lanes will be installed on both sides of Dutch Village Road within the project area.
Transit infrastructure upgrades: New concrete pads will be added to improve accessibility at bus stops.
Streetscaping enhancements: Trees, benches, garbage receptacles, and interpretive signage will be added to enhance the pedestrian experience.
Parking and traffic calming: Existing parking spaces will be replaced with on-street parallel parking and lane widths will be reduced to help calm traffic and improve safety.
Traffic impacts: Access to businesses and properties will be maintained throughout the project; however, residents and commuters should expect the following traffic impacts:
Lane reductions and stop-and-go traffic within the project area
Temporary closures on side-streets to install new underground infrastructure
The sidewalk along Dutch Village Road will remain open for pedestrian use
Transit Impacts: This work will impact Halifax Transit routes 28 and 137. Throughout phases of this project, different bus stops along Dutch Village Road will be impacted and routes may be temporarily detoured.

Intersection Closure - Brunswick and Sackville streets
Location: Intersection of Brunswick and Sackville streets
Date: Thursday, Aug. 21 to Monday, Sept. 8
Time: 24/7
Work details: This work supports infrastructure improvements as part of the Brunswick Street AAA Bikeway Complete Streets project.
Traffic impacts: The intersection of Brunswick and Sackville streets will be closed to all vehicle and cycling traffic.
On Sackville Street, the closure extends from the entrance of the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site to Market Street.
On Brunswick Street, the closure extends from civic address 1663 to 1591 Brunswick Street.
Market Street is temporarily open to two-way traffic between Prince and Sackville streets as a detour route for all road users.
Marked detours will be in place during this work. Drivers should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.
Pedestrian impacts: Pedestrian access will be maintained via marked detours.

Road Closure – Isleville Street
Location: Isleville Street, between Bloomfield and Young streets
Date: Wednesday, Aug. 20 to Wednesday, Nov. 12 (weekdays only)
Time: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Work details: This is to facilitate street upgrades in support of the 2021-25 Regional Council Strategic Priorities Plan to establish a safe and accessible integrated mobility network.
Traffic impact: There will be rolling road closures in this area, with local and emergency access maintained while this work is underway. Marked detours will be in place. Drivers should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.

Road Closure – Old Sambro Road
Location: Old Sambro Road, between Herring Cove and Dentith roads
Date: Tuesday, Aug. 26 to Tuesday, Sept. 16
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day
Work details: This is to facilitate road repair in support of the 2021-25 Regional Council Strategic Priorities Plan to establish a safe and accessible integrated mobility network.
Traffic impact: Access will be maintained for local vehicles, emergency vehicles and pedestrians. A marked detour will be in place while this work is underway. Drivers should expect delays and are asked to use alternative routes where possible.

Traffic Delay – Dutch Village Road Complete Streets project area
Location: Dutch Village Road, between Joseph Howe Drive and Alma Crescent
Dates: Wednesday, Aug. 20 to Friday, Sept. 19
Time: 24/7
Work details: This work is part of the Dutch Village Road Complete Streets project.
Traffic impacts: Access to nearby businesses and properties is being maintained throughout this project.
The current phase of intersection improvement work and related traffic impacts have been extended due to construction delays related to unmarked underground utility infrastructure. The following intersections along the west side of Dutch Village Road will remain closed until Friday, Sept. 19:
Sunnybrae Avenue
Central Avenue
Rosedale Avenue
Frederick Avenue
Rufus Avenue
Local access to these streets is provided via Alex Street and Main Avenue.
Dutch Village Road is open to northbound traffic from the intersection of Joseph Howe Drive and Bayers Road and closed to southbound traffic between Supreme Court and the intersection of Joseph Howe Drive and Bayers Road.
Detour signage will be in place, and personnel will be on-site to direct traffic. Drivers should expect delays and use alternative routes.
Once this phase of work is complete, southbound traffic flows will be restored and the intersections along the west side of Dutch Village Road will reopen. Following this, intersection and roadway improvements will begin on the east side of Dutch Village Road. The municipality will provide advance notice of changes to traffic flows in the project area.

Transit impacts: Inbound routes 28 and 137 will be detoured via Alex Street, Main Avenue and Titus Street to Dutch Village Road. The following bus stops will be temporarily closed during this work:

Rosedale Avenue before Dutch Village Road (8243)
Dutch Village Road before Andrew Street (6609)
Dutch Village Road before Sunnybrae Avenue (6638)
Joseph Howe Drive before Scot Street (6986) (only for route 28)
Outbound routes 28 and 137 will be detoured via Alma Crescent, Main Avenue and Alex Street to Rosedale Avenue. The following bus stops will be temporarily closed during this work:
