This poor North American Porcupine was admitted after being discovered with a leg injury by a compassionate caller
Everyone assumed the limp was the result of being hit by a car, but the leg injury was actually the result of the porky being shot many times with a pellet gun.
The pellets hit the porcupine with a significant amount of force. Enough to embed themselves deep into tissue, and hard enough to shatter the left femur.
Fortunately, there were no other serious injuries caused by the shooting, and we were able to remove the pellets from the leg and pin the bone in place to give it a chance to heal. Our little prickly patient is now much brighter, alert, responsive, vocal, and eating well.
