Residents encouraged to prepare for significant rain and wind event
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents to prepare for a significant rain and wind event today, Dec. 19 and tomorrow, Dec. 20.
Heavy rainfall and strong winds may lead to localized flooding, downed trees and power outages. Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to reduce risk and stay safe:
- Secure loose outdoor items such as garbage bins, holiday decorations and sports equipment.
- Prepare for the possibility of extended power outages by ensuring you have flashlights, batteries, medications and essential supplies at home.
- If you are able to do so safely, clear debris from nearby storm drains and catchbasins to help reduce the risk of localized flooding.
- Avoid flooded areas and never drive through water-covered roads.
The municipality’s Emergency Coordination Centre will be activated as of 8 p.m. this evening to support coordination and response efforts.
The Halifax Public Gardens (and Holiday Light Show) will close at 4 p.m. today and re-open tomorrow when conditions allow.
